Sometimes a change of scenery can be just what the doctor ordered. If you're feeling the need for some new sights, there are great places to explore within easy driving distance of The Village at Hunter's Run. Read on for a few of our favorites, and discover some new ways to enjoy your weekend in nature near Pembroke.
Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve
Located under an hour north of Pembroke, this state park offers miles of hiking trails and unique views of ancient pine forests. What makes the spot particularly special is the presence of a variety of rare wildlife, such as pine barrens tree frogs, and red-cockaded woodpeckers. Despite their name, the latter are small black and white birds. If you're lucky, maybe you'll spot one of them on your hike around the forest.
Wrightsville Beach
Wrightsville Beach requires somewhat more of a drive, but it still makes for an ideal day trip. After all, it's been voted Best Beach in North Carolina, as well as a top surfing town by National Geographic. Head out first thing in the morning, enjoy the sand and surf, and then grab some takeout from Gulfstream Restaurant before exploring the town.
Cape Fear Botanical Garden
Travel north just 45 minutes to experience the beauty of the 80-acre Cape Fear Botanical Garden. You're sure to enjoy the camellia, day lily, and shade gardens. While membership to the garden is not required for entry, the $50 per year for individuals or $70 per year for couples that it costs can be well worth it. Membership allows for unlimited entry.
If you don't have time for a day trip but are looking to get active, the University of North Carolina offers virtual yoga classes!
