Residents of The Village at Hunter's Run can enjoy the picturesque University of North Carolina campus while adhering to social distancing guidelines. If you're in the mood for some fresh air and a stroll around the university grounds, check out the following points of interest along the way.
The Arrowhead
At seven feet tall, this sculpture is likely the largest arrowhead you will ever see. Dating to the early 1930s, the marker is the brainchild of J. Hampton Rich, the former director of the Boone Trail Highway and Memorial Association. The Arrowhead is one of 358 monuments that Rich erected across the nation. This landmark in Pembroke has occupied at least a couple of spots on campus. It currently sits directly across from Old Main, the most prominent and recognizable building at the university.
Statue of Hamilton McMillan
While you're in front of Old Main admiring the Arrowhead, take in the statue of Hamilton McMillan. McMillan was the state representative who introduced legislation in 1885 to create the institution that would ultimately become UNC-Pembroke. McMillan's actions were groundbreaking, in that they provided funding for the creation of the first educational institutions dedicated to Native Americans in the state.
Lowry Bell Tower
The Lowry Bell Tower is in the center of The Quad. It regales visitors with the university's alma mater, along with other musical selections, daily at noon and 6:00 p.m. Visitors to the campus have been enjoying the carillon's music since its dedication in 1981, and it was renovated in 2003. The tower is named for two former faculty members at the university who contributed funding for the tower's bells and chimes. Enjoy the music as you stroll the university grounds.
If a walk and the music of the carillon aren't relaxing enough, give these virtual yoga sessions from the University of North Carolina a try. Yoga is another great way to release tension.
